Pale, clean birch with a moderate grain — it holds portrait work beautifully. Each piece is composed in my own illustrative style rather than a direct photo print — closer to a fine pen-and-ink portrait than a photograph, which has it's own, unique feel and look. There's room for a short inscription above or below the portrait if you'd like one. This is our 5mm birch — a little more substance in the hand, with extra depth for richer blacks and sharper contrast in the engraving. Available in A5 or A4.

A5 and A4 refer to the size of the piece, not the size of the image. I compose each portrait so the subject sits with room to breathe around it — a face pushed to all four edges rarely looks its best. If you'd rather I filled the board edge to edge, or reproduced your photograph exactly as it is, just say and that's what you'll get.

One thing worth knowing before you order: this is a photograph on wood, not a print. The image is burned into the birch, in tones of the wood itself, and the grain runs through the picture and becomes part of it. Every piece is then finished by hand with Danish oil, which soaks deep into the pores and hardens from the inside — protecting the wood from within rather than sitting on the surface, while deepening the engraving and bringing the grain up.
